Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss WHEN AN ADOLESCENT BOY LOSES HIS FATHER

    09-01-2026-
For purposes here we will generally be talking about a boy aged 12 to 18 whose father dies,
give or take a year or two. While it is extremely difficult for someone to lose a parent at any time, our focus is on adolescent boys losing their fathers. The outcomes are often very tragic as highly elevated levels of anxiety, depression, PTSD and anger are too often common. When an adolescent boy loses a father, they have to deal with so many things going on at the same time. They lose stability in their emotional and social life and often have problems in their academic life. A good father provides such things as stability, good modeling, security, financial security, love, affection, status and direction in the life of a growing adolescent male. When this occurs, there is a need for the mother, family members, teachers and friends to recognize what is occurring and try to be as supportive as possible. In spite of the pressure on the mother, it is important she not expect the grieving son to take on the role of a father, help raise the children, be her primary emotional support and not behave like they are not going through an exceptionally difficult emotional time. Without some intervention by the mother and other persons brought in, unhealthy coping mechanisms would include severe anger, irritability, alcohol and other substance abuse, not wanting to talk to friends and other persons, academic decline, and risk taking activities to eliminate some of the numbing and painful experiences being experienced emotionally. It also is possible the grieving son can mask emotions and take on the role of a parent, which is very inappropriate for them at their age. Something important for the grieving mother to do is be as supportive of the son as much as she can. This is very difficult because she is mourning the loss of her beloved husband. As possible, it is important for the mother to make available other good male figures to help the son in these difficult times. It can include grandparents, adult older brothers, uncles, teachers, coaches and neighbors to be helpful. The intervention of a counselor familiar with grieving adolescent boys who have lost their fathers can be very helpful. It is important everyone involved make sure they are understanding what the son is feeling and saying and not judging them. They need to know that to feel horrible and even have some feelings of abandonment and inappropriate guilt are natural. The mother and helping persons must show patience as the son may be irritable and angry that can lead to difficult interactions. They also must give assurance that their feelings are appropriate and that the main thing is to try to work through them and move forward in a mentally healthy manner. A sense of spirituality can also be helpful with the introduction of a priest, pastor or someone else involved from the church who can work with sons of deceased fathers going through very difficult grieving situations. It is essential he knows he is not alone and that there are people willing to help him. This can become a life-threatening crisis if there is suicide ideation and the son is talking about wanting to see their father again and feeling death is the only way out. Something very important to do for the mother and other persons involved is let them talk about their deceased father and all the nice experiences they had together. The point is not to have the person close out memories on someone as important as their deceased father in their lives. No, the point is to try to have them keep these memories in place now so the father does not fully die in their mind and knowing he would want them to follow the advice they had given them over the years. This can be positive to the self-esteem of the son as they now move forward in the world without their father physically, but always remembering and following the advice and modeling they offered out of love. Their fathers must never die in their loving memories.

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss HOW TO DETACH FROM TOXIC PERSONS- subscribe to our page!

    08-04-2026
Toxic persons are those persons who try to diminish you, gaslight you, fight with you and
generally do whatever they can to make you feel bad about yourself. It continues to surprise me in my work as a longtime psychologist and also as a person meeting people as I walk the road of life how many people have toxic people in their lives that they stay connected to that they say they wish were not in their lives. When I ask them the obvious question as to why they continue to maintain the relationships, they sometimes seem surprised I would ask it. They then often say they cannot end it because they could be spouses, partners, family members, friends of friends, neighbors, church members or whoever else. When they honestly discuss their toxic relationship, they admit how much happier they would be if they were no longer in their lives or if they would just change. They also admit that the person most likely will not change because that is just the way they are and they have refused to change over and over again over the years in spite of the emotional pain they know they cause. Once the person realizes that the person is not going to change and they determine to detach the toxic person from their life, regardless of who it is, then positive mental health progress and healing can occur for the abused person. In some cases, this is very hard to do and persons may even decide to continue at least for now to maintain the relationship for one reason or another. Regardless of what you do, it is important in all your relationships to have boundaries, focus on self care as an absolute priority, focus on self-worth improvement, demand mutual respect, do not allow anyone but yourself to define who you are, and keep track of how you are doing in all relationships once your toxic relationship has ended. Once it is clear that you are with a toxic person in your life who is weighing on you emotionally and certainly impacting self-esteem and problems with anger, my general experience has been when you have had a long-term relationship with someone who is toxic to you and you have attempted to change things over time and they do not change, that you then need to detach yourself from the toxic person from your life. I am fully committed to making a marriage work and having relationships with parents and friends. With that said, I also realize that some relationships become so toxic that they are totally destructive to the person and it is best they determine to detach that person from their lives. When someone decides to do this, they generally will need friends who they can count on to support them, maybe a pastor or priest, and potentially a therapist experienced with helping persons deal with extracting toxic persons from their lives. Even if it is very difficult, the emotional self-esteem rewards when detaching the toxic person from your life will greatly outweigh the difficulties.

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss

July 28, 2026- It is clear that being a responsible person does pay off in life. Being a responsible person means you take responsibility for decisions you make that may or not work out as planned or happen to us because of our decisions to do or not do something. It means being honest and doing what you say you will do. You take care of things you do as basic as cleaning up a mess in the kitchen to being a truthful person to all, a reliable parent, partner and friend. This is said recognizing all of us have flaws and do not always live up to being as responsible as we could be. With that said, the goal is that we try to be as responsible as possible. One current problem area would be owing large amounts of money after getting a college degree that does not offer you a good job you would desire because the degree you chose to earn did not teach the training and skills needed in the workplace. It is very difficult because you have all this education and often owe a lot of money. Rather than being angry at the school or persons who may have advised you to get your degree, you need to recognize you did make the decision and now you need to make decisions that will lead to a good vocation and the type of income you need or desire. Another example is the frustrated person who never got around to picking up any particular skills and is unhappy at the job they have with small income. My advice is not to be upset about not having a career and a good income, but rather seek out a career now you desire and get the necessary training. We can find problems from bad decisions ranging from not being responsible as a parent or spouse to not cutting the grass as you promised. Positive outcomes of being responsible for one’s own decisions include good self-esteem and self-respect, respect from others, good relationships with partners, children, family, friends, and acquaintances, not being a burden to others, doing things that need to be done and not bothering others, placing the needs of others above your own as appropriate and at times needed, consistent behaviors and attitudes, being reliable, telling the truth in all relationships, solution oriented decision-making, not blaming others, listening and trying to understand the views of others, and generally being an honest person who can be trusted in all circumstances. I again indicate human beings are not perfect. There are times that we will fail, but the goal is to be as responsible as we can be in all dealings with others and ourselves. Happiness and satisfaction are the result of good decision-making in our lives. We in effect are the reflection of the decisions we make and the resulting life we lead. #PersonalResponsibility #Accountability #PersonalGrowth

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM HOW TO MAINTAIN GAINS IN PAIN MANAGEMENT- subscribe to our page!

August 11, 2026- Because of my regularly doing psychological evaluations pertaining to spinal cord stimulators to help reduce pain, I am often talking to people who are in chronic pain and seeking relief. Also because I have treated persons to offer mental health suggestions on how to overcome chronic pain, I am aware that large numbers of persons have had to find ways to cope with pain as best they can resulting from arthritis, osteoporosis, sciatica, slipped discs, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, migraine headaches, or any other situation that causes chronic pain. Chronic pain is that type of pain that never fully leaves you. It may vary from day-to-day, but is always there. How persons individually cope with pain on a regular basis depends on the person and the pain they are dealing with as well as their ability and desire to find mental health techniques to help to go along with any pain medications they are prescribed. Finding and maintaining effective mental health strategies to overcome pain have become more important as we as a society realize that many pain medications are leading to addictions by persons in pain. The important thing to remember is that giving in to the pain is never acceptable because the end result will be anxiety, depression and worse pain. Mental health strategies to try to ameliorate pain and maintain gains that one has obtained through pain management would include positive affirmations that reinforce/support your strategies for pain management, realistic goals you remember as you deal with your pain, keeping track of your progress for reinforcement/encouragement, see going backwards as something that can occur but to always try to move forward, change goals based on the reality of your circumstances, accept challenges and difficulties will occur and try to resolve them as they come up as best you can, accept there are times you will need help and ask for it, a strong sense of spirituality can also be helpful, do progressive relaxation, deep breathing, and self hypnosis to help reduce pain, anxiety and depression when the pain is strong and is hard to cope with, reward yourself as you continue on your road to maintaining your ability to fight your pain as best you can, and possibly seeking out a therapist experienced in pain management to help you as you mentally try strategies to help ameliorate your chronic pain and maintain it. My final point is that chronic pain is something horrible to deal with day in and day out and any mental health strategy that can be used to help eliminate it and maintain pain relief needs to be considered and tried.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss DEALING WITH MAJOR LIFE TRANSITIONS

July 21, 2026- Transitions are an important part of our lives. They are those times in our lives that can be
exhilarating but can cause great emotional pain resulting in anxiety and depression. How we
deal with them has a lot to do with the level of satisfaction and happiness we will have in our
lives. Transitions would include death of someone we really care for, job changes by choice or
necessity, changing job requirements, divorce, marriage, parenting, buying and moving into a
home, falling in love, financial stress, incarceration, and moving to a new location. Some of
these transitions are by choice such as buying a house or taking a new job, but they can be
stressful transitions we need to learn to adapt. Situations like death of a loved one, being fired,
needing to move to a new location or a divorce are transitions that can be exceptionally difficult
and devastating to a person as they experience them. Regardless of whether the transition is
sought or thrown upon us, the following ways to deal with natural transitions that we all
encounter as we live our lives would include accepting the reality that transitions always occur in
our lives, recognize and accept they are occurring and adapt to them as fast as possible, have
realistic expectations of what to expect, develop a support system as needed, keep yourself in
good physical and mental health, recognize good decisions made now will lead to a better
outcome in the future of whatever transition you are experiencing, and never stop trying to move
forward in life as best as possible. An important thing to remember is transitions will always
occur in our life regardless of what plans we make to not have them occur. The death of a loved
one, being divorced or being fired from a job are things one cannot plan for appropriately and
can lead to great distress. Before these things occur, it is important persons think about how
they will react to such possible transitions, and even if they become overwhelmed, realize they
will survive. How well they survive will depend on their attitude and behaviors. Pretending they
will not occur and not planning for them will lead to greater devastation for the transitions we
have not sought and which can be so damaging psychologically. It also is true transitions we
desire can have some potential negative outcomes. Persons may be excited about taking a new
job, but when in it may question their capabilities and somehow may be focusing on what they
liked about their past job. A person who has always wanted to move to another city may enjoy
living there, but then can feel lonely or lost in the adapting to an unknown city loaded with
unknown people and activities going on that are the normal parts of a city. Something to
remember is that transitions are difficult under the best of circumstances and it is important to
accept this. Try to have a plan to deal with them as they occur. I have given you some
suggestions but trying to see most transitions as opportunities for resolution rather than
overwhelming problems is a good place to try to change your outlook on life transitions.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss how MANY YOUNG MEN REJECTING COUPLES INTIMACY

    July 15, 2026-
We are today specifically talking about young men rejecting couples intimacy. It is a phenomenon that most persons are not familiar with and have probably not thought about very much if at all. A starting point is that 60% of young men under 30 are single. Sexual intimacy was at a 30 years low a few years ago and this trend seems to be continuing. In the years 2022-2023, 24% of men aged 22 through 34 reported they had had no sex with a partner in the past year. It also is reported that 76 to 87% of men 18 to 29 years old are regularly consuming pornography. Another interesting reported situation is that men between the ages of 20 and 30 are spending less time outdoors than prison inmates. It also was reported that there are men who use porn who tend to report less satisfaction with real live sex. And on top of all this, the lack of interaction skills that were not developed during Covid, when persons were often relegated to just using the Internet for communication, adds another interesting dimension to this situation. Another factor is that many men appear to find Internet excitement and self gratification more satisfying, less complicated and less risky than trying to be in a relationship with a partner with mutually satisfying intimacy. A problem with all of this information is that people arguably need interactions with people for good mental health and this trend is not good for men and certainly leads to a much smaller pool of men for women who desire to marry let alone have the ability to have children and hopefully love generating homes. Reasons given for this current situation in addition to Covid would include that many women also are not that ready to be in an intimate couples relationship as they are striving for educational and personal goals. There also are men who grew up in dysfunctional homes who have no desire to be part of one. There also is the generally unreasonable fear by some men that women will lie about them in any sexual relationship and they choose not to be involved. I personally have heard young men fearful of being falsely accused of inappropriate sexual activities in an intimate relationship that might go in a negative way. Even if this is not reasonable, if a man has this belief and decides to act on it, it can lead to a lack of couples intimacy. A problem with possibly changing this whole lack of couples intimacy situation with men is that there is no easy solution if one is of the belief that men are better off in a couples relationship with good intimacy that results in children and potentially a happy and loving family. At present, there does not appear to be a great awareness of the situation or any desire to change it.
