Even though over 20 million persons in the United States suffer Major Depressive Disorder at all times,it is still not understood by too many persons who cannot calculate in their minds why persons they believe should be happy or more satisfied are not. These views would completely change if for one day they experienced their severe symptoms and feelings of hopelessness they cannot contain emotionally. The symptoms can include suicide ideation, insomnia, numbness, worthlessness, past failure, feeling overwhelmed, sadness, loss of energy, irritability, lack of focus, crying and agitation. The causes would often be some combination of emotional and physical. “Stinking Thinking” filled with negative thoughts also often plays a key role. Some combination of medication and therapy can often lead to relief. An important thing for the person who is not depressed and wants to be supportive is to be available to talk whenever it can be helpful. The person with major depression needs the person not to judge or blame them for their depression.
