Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss WHEN AN ADOLESCENT BOY LOSES HIS FATHER

    09-01-2026-
For purposes here we will generally be talking about a boy aged 12 to 18 whose father dies,
give or take a year or two. While it is extremely difficult for someone to lose a parent at any time, our focus is on adolescent boys losing their fathers. The outcomes are often very tragic as highly elevated levels of anxiety, depression, PTSD and anger are too often common. When an adolescent boy loses a father, they have to deal with so many things going on at the same time. They lose stability in their emotional and social life and often have problems in their academic life. A good father provides such things as stability, good modeling, security, financial security, love, affection, status and direction in the life of a growing adolescent male. When this occurs, there is a need for the mother, family members, teachers and friends to recognize what is occurring and try to be as supportive as possible. In spite of the pressure on the mother, it is important she not expect the grieving son to take on the role of a father, help raise the children, be her primary emotional support and not behave like they are not going through an exceptionally difficult emotional time. Without some intervention by the mother and other persons brought in, unhealthy coping mechanisms would include severe anger, irritability, alcohol and other substance abuse, not wanting to talk to friends and other persons, academic decline, and risk taking activities to eliminate some of the numbing and painful experiences being experienced emotionally. It also is possible the grieving son can mask emotions and take on the role of a parent, which is very inappropriate for them at their age. Something important for the grieving mother to do is be as supportive of the son as much as she can. This is very difficult because she is mourning the loss of her beloved husband. As possible, it is important for the mother to make available other good male figures to help the son in these difficult times. It can include grandparents, adult older brothers, uncles, teachers, coaches and neighbors to be helpful. The intervention of a counselor familiar with grieving adolescent boys who have lost their fathers can be very helpful. It is important everyone involved make sure they are understanding what the son is feeling and saying and not judging them. They need to know that to feel horrible and even have some feelings of abandonment and inappropriate guilt are natural. The mother and helping persons must show patience as the son may be irritable and angry that can lead to difficult interactions. They also must give assurance that their feelings are appropriate and that the main thing is to try to work through them and move forward in a mentally healthy manner. A sense of spirituality can also be helpful with the introduction of a priest, pastor or someone else involved from the church who can work with sons of deceased fathers going through very difficult grieving situations. It is essential he knows he is not alone and that there are people willing to help him. This can become a life-threatening crisis if there is suicide ideation and the son is talking about wanting to see their father again and feeling death is the only way out. Something very important to do for the mother and other persons involved is let them talk about their deceased father and all the nice experiences they had together. The point is not to have the person close out memories on someone as important as their deceased father in their lives. No, the point is to try to have them keep these memories in place now so the father does not fully die in their mind and knowing he would want them to follow the advice they had given them over the years. This can be positive to the self-esteem of the son as they now move forward in the world without their father physically, but always remembering and following the advice and modeling they offered out of love. Their fathers must never die in their loving memories.

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss SUCCESSFUL GRAY MARRIAGE- subscribe to our YouTube page!

    August 25, 2026-
We live in an age when 40% of divorces in the United States are with persons 50 years old and
older. Common reasons for this would include persons living longer, people not living happily
day-to-day together after children leave and retirement, and persons just deciding they do not
love each other and want to spend their last maybe 20-40 years away from that person.
Whatever the reason, divorces are extremely high in this age group. A not surprising outcome is that there are many “gray marriages” where persons are marrying usually at least for the second time at 50 years or older. Common reasons for marrying at 50 are similar to marrying at an earlier time and would include someone loving them, them loving someone, affection and
intimacy, financial security, emotional security, companionship, mutual personal growth, and
enjoying sharing a life with someone on a daily basis. Concerns not always thought about but
critical to having a successful “gray marriage” would include a prenuptial agreement to eliminate potential anger and frustration with each other and family members, open awareness of the financial situation of each person prior to the marriage, honest discussion about how each will look after one or the other if health collapses and there is a need for care, estate planning, a mutually trusted family member or corporate trustee to manage the estate when death occurs, and full involvement of all members of what will become a blended family. It amazes me how many people I have personally known who have entered a “gray marriage” and ended up having major conflicts with their children, children of their spouse, and problems after their death because things were not planned and everyone ends up mad at each other and too often there is a breakdown for life with members of the family who are left behind when the person dies. Love and companionship can be critical for someone at any age, but a “gray marriage” requires a lot of planning other than wanting love and companionship, and not taking into account the many problems that can occur without good planning and communication with all involved persons can turn your “gray marriage” into a nightmare for you and everyone else involved. I cannot too strongly suggest that persons considering a “gray marriage” do a lot of planning prior to their marriage other than the critical elements of loving each other and wanting companionship.

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 CHOOSING TO BE ALONE CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

    August 18, 2026-
We have talked in the past about how there is often an assumption that people who are not around people are unhappy and will have poor mental health often with anxiety, depression, social anxiety and other conditions negatively impacting their mental health. That may be true for some people, but it is not true for everyone. I am saying this as someone who has always advocated for people developing friendships with people and stating that as human beings we generally need to be around other people on a regular basis and develop strong relationships with them. With that said, there are many persons who are quite happy with good mental health spending most of their time with themselves. Even a few enjoy a life with themselves with few if any close personal relationships. It is not good mental health when a person wants relationships with other people and is generally alone because they believe people do not like them, they are always saying things that cause problems, people have hurt them emotionally, they are fearful of meeting new people, and they have generally poor self-esteem that makes it hard for them to interact with others and develop close human relationships. In these circumstances, a lack of personal relationships is negative and can be quite destructive to a person’s mental health. Positive mental health can be the result when a person does not have many social interactions for many reasons that would include enjoying seeking better insight into themselves, being creative, regulating their moods, self acceptance, enjoying self with no interruptions, implementing difficult tasks, not relying on others, defining who they are and not others, developing greater spirituality, and enjoying time to have their mind fly in any direction they desire. I remember reading a biography of Winston Churchill, the great British Prime Minister during World War II, saying that even during the periods of time he was out of power and depressed that he was never bored because he had Winston Churchill to talk to! When I read that some years ago, I found that interesting. The more I have thought about it and have known persons who enjoy their own company, I have been able to make some sense out of it and see that it is accurate for some persons. My point here is not to suggest that persons who love being with other persons in close relationships are unhappy. No,but it is also true many persons in many close relationships often worry about how they are seen in these relationships and often desire their approval as part of the process. It also is true there are persons who do not desire a lot of time with other persons but interact with persons and may have friends and family they have a close connection. The point is that they do not need close ongoing relationships and they control the interactions they have with others.

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss HOW TO DETACH FROM TOXIC PERSONS- subscribe to our page!

    08-04-2026
Toxic persons are those persons who try to diminish you, gaslight you, fight with you and
generally do whatever they can to make you feel bad about yourself. It continues to surprise me in my work as a longtime psychologist and also as a person meeting people as I walk the road of life how many people have toxic people in their lives that they stay connected to that they say they wish were not in their lives. When I ask them the obvious question as to why they continue to maintain the relationships, they sometimes seem surprised I would ask it. They then often say they cannot end it because they could be spouses, partners, family members, friends of friends, neighbors, church members or whoever else. When they honestly discuss their toxic relationship, they admit how much happier they would be if they were no longer in their lives or if they would just change. They also admit that the person most likely will not change because that is just the way they are and they have refused to change over and over again over the years in spite of the emotional pain they know they cause. Once the person realizes that the person is not going to change and they determine to detach the toxic person from their life, regardless of who it is, then positive mental health progress and healing can occur for the abused person. In some cases, this is very hard to do and persons may even decide to continue at least for now to maintain the relationship for one reason or another. Regardless of what you do, it is important in all your relationships to have boundaries, focus on self care as an absolute priority, focus on self-worth improvement, demand mutual respect, do not allow anyone but yourself to define who you are, and keep track of how you are doing in all relationships once your toxic relationship has ended. Once it is clear that you are with a toxic person in your life who is weighing on you emotionally and certainly impacting self-esteem and problems with anger, my general experience has been when you have had a long-term relationship with someone who is toxic to you and you have attempted to change things over time and they do not change, that you then need to detach yourself from the toxic person from your life. I am fully committed to making a marriage work and having relationships with parents and friends. With that said, I also realize that some relationships become so toxic that they are totally destructive to the person and it is best they determine to detach that person from their lives. When someone decides to do this, they generally will need friends who they can count on to support them, maybe a pastor or priest, and potentially a therapist experienced with helping persons deal with extracting toxic persons from their lives. Even if it is very difficult, the emotional self-esteem rewards when detaching the toxic person from your life will greatly outweigh the difficulties.

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss

July 28, 2026- It is clear that being a responsible person does pay off in life. Being a responsible person means you take responsibility for decisions you make that may or not work out as planned or happen to us because of our decisions to do or not do something. It means being honest and doing what you say you will do. You take care of things you do as basic as cleaning up a mess in the kitchen to being a truthful person to all, a reliable parent, partner and friend. This is said recognizing all of us have flaws and do not always live up to being as responsible as we could be. With that said, the goal is that we try to be as responsible as possible. One current problem area would be owing large amounts of money after getting a college degree that does not offer you a good job you would desire because the degree you chose to earn did not teach the training and skills needed in the workplace. It is very difficult because you have all this education and often owe a lot of money. Rather than being angry at the school or persons who may have advised you to get your degree, you need to recognize you did make the decision and now you need to make decisions that will lead to a good vocation and the type of income you need or desire. Another example is the frustrated person who never got around to picking up any particular skills and is unhappy at the job they have with small income. My advice is not to be upset about not having a career and a good income, but rather seek out a career now you desire and get the necessary training. We can find problems from bad decisions ranging from not being responsible as a parent or spouse to not cutting the grass as you promised. Positive outcomes of being responsible for one’s own decisions include good self-esteem and self-respect, respect from others, good relationships with partners, children, family, friends, and acquaintances, not being a burden to others, doing things that need to be done and not bothering others, placing the needs of others above your own as appropriate and at times needed, consistent behaviors and attitudes, being reliable, telling the truth in all relationships, solution oriented decision-making, not blaming others, listening and trying to understand the views of others, and generally being an honest person who can be trusted in all circumstances. I again indicate human beings are not perfect. There are times that we will fail, but the goal is to be as responsible as we can be in all dealings with others and ourselves. Happiness and satisfaction are the result of good decision-making in our lives. We in effect are the reflection of the decisions we make and the resulting life we lead. #PersonalResponsibility #Accountability #PersonalGrowth

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM HOW TO MAINTAIN GAINS IN PAIN MANAGEMENT- subscribe to our page!

August 11, 2026- Because of my regularly doing psychological evaluations pertaining to spinal cord stimulators to help reduce pain, I am often talking to people who are in chronic pain and seeking relief. Also because I have treated persons to offer mental health suggestions on how to overcome chronic pain, I am aware that large numbers of persons have had to find ways to cope with pain as best they can resulting from arthritis, osteoporosis, sciatica, slipped discs, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, migraine headaches, or any other situation that causes chronic pain. Chronic pain is that type of pain that never fully leaves you. It may vary from day-to-day, but is always there. How persons individually cope with pain on a regular basis depends on the person and the pain they are dealing with as well as their ability and desire to find mental health techniques to help to go along with any pain medications they are prescribed. Finding and maintaining effective mental health strategies to overcome pain have become more important as we as a society realize that many pain medications are leading to addictions by persons in pain. The important thing to remember is that giving in to the pain is never acceptable because the end result will be anxiety, depression and worse pain. Mental health strategies to try to ameliorate pain and maintain gains that one has obtained through pain management would include positive affirmations that reinforce/support your strategies for pain management, realistic goals you remember as you deal with your pain, keeping track of your progress for reinforcement/encouragement, see going backwards as something that can occur but to always try to move forward, change goals based on the reality of your circumstances, accept challenges and difficulties will occur and try to resolve them as they come up as best you can, accept there are times you will need help and ask for it, a strong sense of spirituality can also be helpful, do progressive relaxation, deep breathing, and self hypnosis to help reduce pain, anxiety and depression when the pain is strong and is hard to cope with, reward yourself as you continue on your road to maintaining your ability to fight your pain as best you can, and possibly seeking out a therapist experienced in pain management to help you as you mentally try strategies to help ameliorate your chronic pain and maintain it. My final point is that chronic pain is something horrible to deal with day in and day out and any mental health strategy that can be used to help eliminate it and maintain pain relief needs to be considered and tried.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss DEALING WITH MAJOR LIFE TRANSITIONS

July 21, 2026- Transitions are an important part of our lives. They are those times in our lives that can be
exhilarating but can cause great emotional pain resulting in anxiety and depression. How we
deal with them has a lot to do with the level of satisfaction and happiness we will have in our
lives. Transitions would include death of someone we really care for, job changes by choice or
necessity, changing job requirements, divorce, marriage, parenting, buying and moving into a
home, falling in love, financial stress, incarceration, and moving to a new location. Some of
these transitions are by choice such as buying a house or taking a new job, but they can be
stressful transitions we need to learn to adapt. Situations like death of a loved one, being fired,
needing to move to a new location or a divorce are transitions that can be exceptionally difficult
and devastating to a person as they experience them. Regardless of whether the transition is
sought or thrown upon us, the following ways to deal with natural transitions that we all
encounter as we live our lives would include accepting the reality that transitions always occur in
our lives, recognize and accept they are occurring and adapt to them as fast as possible, have
realistic expectations of what to expect, develop a support system as needed, keep yourself in
good physical and mental health, recognize good decisions made now will lead to a better
outcome in the future of whatever transition you are experiencing, and never stop trying to move
forward in life as best as possible. An important thing to remember is transitions will always
occur in our life regardless of what plans we make to not have them occur. The death of a loved
one, being divorced or being fired from a job are things one cannot plan for appropriately and
can lead to great distress. Before these things occur, it is important persons think about how
they will react to such possible transitions, and even if they become overwhelmed, realize they
will survive. How well they survive will depend on their attitude and behaviors. Pretending they
will not occur and not planning for them will lead to greater devastation for the transitions we
have not sought and which can be so damaging psychologically. It also is true transitions we
desire can have some potential negative outcomes. Persons may be excited about taking a new
job, but when in it may question their capabilities and somehow may be focusing on what they
liked about their past job. A person who has always wanted to move to another city may enjoy
living there, but then can feel lonely or lost in the adapting to an unknown city loaded with
unknown people and activities going on that are the normal parts of a city. Something to
remember is that transitions are difficult under the best of circumstances and it is important to
accept this. Try to have a plan to deal with them as they occur. I have given you some
suggestions but trying to see most transitions as opportunities for resolution rather than
overwhelming problems is a good place to try to change your outlook on life transitions.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss how MANY YOUNG MEN REJECTING COUPLES INTIMACY

    July 15, 2026-
We are today specifically talking about young men rejecting couples intimacy. It is a phenomenon that most persons are not familiar with and have probably not thought about very much if at all. A starting point is that 60% of young men under 30 are single. Sexual intimacy was at a 30 years low a few years ago and this trend seems to be continuing. In the years 2022-2023, 24% of men aged 22 through 34 reported they had had no sex with a partner in the past year. It also is reported that 76 to 87% of men 18 to 29 years old are regularly consuming pornography. Another interesting reported situation is that men between the ages of 20 and 30 are spending less time outdoors than prison inmates. It also was reported that there are men who use porn who tend to report less satisfaction with real live sex. And on top of all this, the lack of interaction skills that were not developed during Covid, when persons were often relegated to just using the Internet for communication, adds another interesting dimension to this situation. Another factor is that many men appear to find Internet excitement and self gratification more satisfying, less complicated and less risky than trying to be in a relationship with a partner with mutually satisfying intimacy. A problem with all of this information is that people arguably need interactions with people for good mental health and this trend is not good for men and certainly leads to a much smaller pool of men for women who desire to marry let alone have the ability to have children and hopefully love generating homes. Reasons given for this current situation in addition to Covid would include that many women also are not that ready to be in an intimate couples relationship as they are striving for educational and personal goals. There also are men who grew up in dysfunctional homes who have no desire to be part of one. There also is the generally unreasonable fear by some men that women will lie about them in any sexual relationship and they choose not to be involved. I personally have heard young men fearful of being falsely accused of inappropriate sexual activities in an intimate relationship that might go in a negative way. Even if this is not reasonable, if a man has this belief and decides to act on it, it can lead to a lack of couples intimacy. A problem with possibly changing this whole lack of couples intimacy situation with men is that there is no easy solution if one is of the belief that men are better off in a couples relationship with good intimacy that results in children and potentially a happy and loving family. At present, there does not appear to be a great awareness of the situation or any desire to change it.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss Negative outcomes of poor parenting

July 7, 2026- There are many possible negative outcomes of poor parenting. The particular outcomes will
vary from person to person, even if persons seem to come from similar circumstances, because
each individual is different and finds different mechanisms to deal with what is happening to
them in a home with poor parenting. It also is true each individual is unique and encounters life
and reacts to it differently. It also is true that resources available to the person that they utilize
for their own well-being varies widely for each individual coming from a home with poor
parenting. Even though there are varying degrees and acts of poor parenting, the key areas of
poor parenting would include such factors as emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Included
would be neglect and parental lack of any sense of family care and love. While sexual and
physical abuse may predictably lead to greater negative outcomes, emotional abuse and
neglect can be psychologically devastating to the person. There are many possible negative
outcomes of poor parenting. Common outcomes are anxiety, depression, poor self-esteem,
aggression, defiance, fear, no backbone to defend self, perfectionism, poor attachment,
indecisiveness, cannot trust, fear of intimacy, poor interpersonal relationships, poor academic
performance, substance abuse, delinquency , inappropriate sexual activities, and worst of all,
continuing the same parental dysfunctional behaviors with their own children and partners in
their lives. Positive factors to counter poor parenting would include relationships with stable
family members, relationships with stable persons, caring teachers, caring coaches, caring
clergy, good friends, team member relationships, good role models, and any personal
experience that can counter the negativity in their home. If you have come from such a home
and feel you have been damaged emotionally by your experiences at home when growing up, it
is never a time to accept this is just the way you are and nothing can be done. Through a
combination of self-love, replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts, developing
relationships with people who are positive and can care for you, joining spiritual or other groups
that offer camaraderie and caring, and potentially seeking out an experienced therapist to help
you in your road to better self-esteem are things you can do to compensate and even throw out
the negativity that has resulted in your life because of poor parenting.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss HOW TO GET MOTIVATION BACK- Subscribe to our YouTube page!

June 30, 2026- Are you bored in life and nothing excites you? Do you go through the motions of life, but the fun is gone? Do you find yourself alive, but with no emotional spark? If so, then you are missing out on what a person needs in order to be happy. I will add this lack of motivation can happen in a life that most persons would consider very positive. It does not matter what someone else might think, the important thing is if you find you have a lack of motivation and want to do something about it. Before we talk about things to do to regain motivation in your life, let us talk about some of the things that cause someone to lose motivation. They would include a person being bored, being rudderless and going in no particular direction in life, being depressed and anxious, having too much routine in their life, spending too much time watching television or digital time, not taking care of self emotionally and physically, a lack of spirituality, and simply accepting your life with lack of motivation is something you cannot change. If this is happening to you, you can make changes so you can overcome your lack of motivation in life. They would include investing some time to figure out what you are doing with your time, initially set some small changes to your life that you feel could be helpful and you can do, gradually add more changes, remember your passions and interactions that were exciting in the past, seek spirituality to give more purpose to your life, do things that are fun and different from what you are doing, walk and exercise to keep the body in good shape, keep your mind active with puzzles, reading and other things to keep the mind going, get outside and connect with nature, get some nutrition back in your life and make sure you are eating healthy, get enough sleep, finding new people or groups to add to your life, spend time helping others and being grateful for what you have, limit television and digital time, look at your job and see if you need a new position, look and see if you need more education for a new job or career you desire, be accepting of yourself and your feelings but determined you are going to get some motivation back in your life, and as needed, seek out a trained therapist to help you get more motivation and direction in life.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss STOP YOUR SHOPAHOLIC WAYS

    June 23, 2026-
Everyone periodically can fall into a shopaholic spending spree. For clarification, we are not talking about the person who has a Compulsive Shopping Disorder(CSD) to the level they are in severe financial distress with resulting anxiety and depression because of their compulsion. No, we are talking about the person who spends too much money on shopping and desires to control the spending urges. A person with a severe compulsion to buy who cannot stop on their own very likely needs to find a therapist experienced in compulsive behavior and potentially a group to sort out the problem. The problem we are discussing here is when being a shopaholic leads to you spending beyond your means or simply wasting money spending on things you do not need but feel you want in the moment. When you decide to quit being a shopaholic, a simple plan to start besides cutting up the credit card and waiting a week before buying something you want, is to designate a period of time to only get what you need and when you need it. This is much easier said than done. During this period, on a daily basis, determine what motivates you to buy as urges come forward to buy things and you control what you spend. Typical reasons would be Internet ads, deals from retailers you commonly buy, shopping trips with friends or family, peer pressure to buy, surfing sites like Amazon, a bargain you cannot resist, or a desire to own something regardless of your need. If you want to effectively stop being a shopaholic, you need to distinguish between need and want. Many people have a problem with this distinction. You need to do it to control your shopaholic spending habits whether you are 15 or 80 years old. Minimizing shopping trips with friends or family can help. Most people can remember coming home from shopping or the shopping trip with many things they really do not need and not even sure they want after they have them. Being willing to return things that one determines they do not need or they do not use is part of the process of stopping being a shopaholic. The more you do this the more you will realize how many things you buy that you do not need. It is a wise thing to look at how many clothes or books or whatever you have bought and see if you ever used them. While hopefully on a much smaller scale, you may find you have become “Emelda Marcos” in the present. You might remember that during her period as the First Lady of the Philippines, she had at least 1060 pairs of shoes. You do not want to fall into the pattern of going shopping and talking about how much you saved while ignoring or not wanting to admit how much you spent. It is difficult to stop being a shopaholic, but now is a good time to start.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss “Family meetings can enhance family unity”

June 16, 2026- I strongly believe family meetings can enhance family unity and communication. This is true even in our world where we no longer always have the nuclear family and there often is one parent raising children, parents co-parenting children, or there is some combination of family members in a blended family. I would argue that regardless of the composition of the family, having family meetings on a regular basis can be very helpful. In such a fast paced world where social media and the Internet can capture the attention of children and adults for a good share of a day, it is important that there be times that families meet and discuss things related to them. I would suggest these be on a weekly basis to the point they become something that is expected and often pulls the family together when distractions separate family members from each other. Typical things that
can be gained from regular family meetings would include improving family communication by having all members communicating, allowing children and adults to discuss their feelings and make arguments about what their needs are and what is important to them, a place that is psychologically safe where everyone can share their feelings and not feel they are going to be attacked or not be listened to, observe parents modeling tolerance and understanding, everyone can have a sense of belonging, resolve conflicts that otherwise can simmer and lead to breakdowns in the family, using communication to enhance understanding in relationships, teaching children and parents alike how to listen, share home work responsibilities and work together as a team, compromise, teach leadership through parental modeling that will carryover not only from family meetings but to other relationships in life, and develop a closeness among family members that often is lacking. Parents often do not do this because life can be so hectic that it is hard to have a time when people can sit down and talk. It also happens because it does not seem to be something that is really promoted as important in our society. I am not saying that people are opposed to family meetings. No, I am simply saying it does not seem to be something that people are talking about and doing as a priority. I can say from my interactions with people in my work and life in general that family meetings are not common. It is not easy to just sit down and have family meetings. It is best they have been developed as the family was growing and became a natural thing for people to do. This is something that should happen at least once a at a time that is picked each week to get everybody together and talk. It is never too late to start. My advice is to begin trying it and see how it works out. It may be awkward initially, but the possibility of developing better family communication certainly makes it worth the effort.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss LIVE A WIN-WIN APPROACH TO LIFE

June 6, 2026- Too many people live a life where everything is competitive. They see every event and situation
as a win-lose or zero-sum situation with a winner and a loser. Having a clear winner may be
reasonable in sporting events and even fair competition for a specific job where skills and
talents are evaluated in the decision process. If we exclude those kinds of situations, most
situations we encounter in life are best dealt with from a win-win perspective. This means the
goal of negotiating or bargaining is that each person gains some of what they desire to the level
of being satisfied. There is not a winner and a loser, but two winners. This requires maturity and
a desire to negotiate fairly with a goal of everyone being satisfied. In such a situation, both
persons are willing to give up something to get something in return. The end result is both have
a level of satisfaction and future negotiating will be much easier to occur. A positive mental
health outcome is that persons who want to live in a world of win-win interactions with people
are usually better liked by others and are comfortable with themselves. For clarification, we are
not talking about people who just give in and often have anger and resulting anxiety and
depression because they do not get what they desire in life. No, we are talking about well
balanced persons who try to be team players in interactions with others. Examples of win-win
situations would be equally sharing duties in a household, further education for employees that
gives them incentive to stay with the company in spite of a risk of them leaving and makes them
more valuable employees, dividing a business territory where each will offer services and not
attempt to knock out the other one, fairly sharing expenses in all endeavors, determining not to
dominate conversations and use active listening for fair and better communication, sharing work
fairly in the workplace with fellow employees, and dividing up responsibilities fairly between
owners of a company…General outcomes of win-win interactions would be that everyone has
some success and is a winner, no one feels overwhelmed or treated unfairly by someone,
relationships are much better, success is shared, opportunities for further advancement for all
often occurs through the outcomes of win-win interactions, and better mental health for persons
who do not have the desire to dominate and control others with a zero-sum outlook on life. With
this said, we also must accept and be aware that persons with the best intentions can
sometimes not come up with a win-win situation and need to indicate this and move forward
from their disagreement. This is hopefully done in good faith with a willingness to meet again if
there becomes a possibility of obtaining a win-win situation for each person.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY FOR MARRIAGE

June 2, 2026- In a nation where half of those who get married or remarried have a strong chance of divorcing, it certainly makes a lot of sense to make sure you are ready when you get married. A further negative outcome of ill advised marriages that end in divorce that is often not considered is the impact of divorce on children. It is not talked about enough, but the well documented negative results of divorce on children that include educational attainment, educational achievement, parental estrangement, economic home strength, anger and psychological issues, identity confusion, socialization issues and low self-esteem need to be taken into account when divorce is considered. From someone who has worked with married couples and individuals getting divorced over the years, a common reason divorced persons or unhappily married persons have given me when asked why they married said they were not thinking clearly about the decision. This is actually shocking when one considers how important marriage is, and how often people will spend weeks debating what type of a car or appliance to buy before they buy it, but will get married and quite possibly have children, when clearly the odds of the marriage failing are far greater.
They people do all the appropriate planning and thinking prior to getting married. Common reasons persons give for having gotten married that they now know were not good reasons would include believing they were too invested in the relationship to not marry even when loaded with doubts, too young and immature, under extreme pressure from outside persons and family to marry, educational differences, life goals, spending priorities, child rearing, spiritual differences, deciding to go contrary to what friends and family who advised them not to get married, feeling short term intense shallow love that seemed unbreakable, physical attraction that was extreme, no real knowledge of each other, rebounding from a divorce or horrible breakup, unrealistic expectations, fears of being alone, choosing to be married when not being married seems worse, and financial need and support. A simple point here is that prior to getting married, couples need to get to know each other very well and determine what the expectations for the marriage and their future include. To not do this is to greatly increase the possibility of unhappiness and divorce.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss HOW ADHD CAN NEGATIVELY IMPACT YOU AT WORK

    May 26, 2026
I personally have worked with and evaluated many persons with ADHD over the decades where the characteristics they exhibit in the workplace negatively impact their ability to effectively fulfill their job requirements. This is true with many persons who are working in areas they personally love and went through extensive training to be able to do. It is not a lack of ability or desire. Before I identify characteristics that persons exhibit that have ADHD, it is important we not include in this group persons who by choice do not work to their ability and do not try to function to their highest level and as a result, find themselves having problems in the workplace. No, we are talking about persons who have ADHD and are having problems in the workplace because of it, but have not been diagnosed. As a result, they have received no medical or mental health suggestions for overcoming it. Persons with ADHD have some combination of the characteristics of lack of focus, inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and procrastination. When undiagnosed and untreated, the impact can be devastating in the workplace. Characteristics of ADHD that negatively impact the person in the workplace would include poor focus on required activities, time blindness/losing track of time, inability to focus on tasks, high error rate due to lack of focus and inattention, joblessness over time due to poor work performance, a poor team member on projects that require team effort to complete them, poor productivity, stress related work absences, stigma of having the ADHD label, mind travel from one thought to another when paying attention is critical, procrastination, problems with organizing activities, problems with prioritizing activities, distractibility, impulsivity, and poor memory. It is important to remember that no one has all of these characteristics, but even a few of them can cause you problems in doing effective work in the workplace. If you feel you have any of these characteristics and they are
negatively impacting you in your job performance, then I would suggest you seek out an ADHD evaluation by a psychologist and receive appropriate medication and mental health recommendations consistent with your specific needs. A trained therapist in ADHD and the resulting potential negative impact in the workplace could be helpful. The first step is to
determine if you do have ADHD, and if so, what can be done to best help you overcome the characteristics if they are negatively impacting you in the workplace.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss OVERCOMING TOXIC PARENTING AS AN ADULT

    05-19-2026
Too many adults are very unhappy and sometimes functioning very poorly as adults because of growing up with toxic parents in dysfunctional homes that had various degrees of instability, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and just emotionally unhealthy conditions. At a minimum, it was bad modeling and children coming from these homes as adults often find it very
hard to know what is appropriate behavior in relationships with people ranging from short term interactions to close friends and family members in a stable manner. This instability can lead to poor relationships, poor academic achievement, lacking trust in others, anger, poor employment behavior, eating disorders, inappropriate sexual behaviors, anxiety, PTSD, depression and poor self-esteem. In order to overcome these problems as adults, it is important that the person let go emotionally and physically from parents and family members who are toxic and cause them emotional distress. Emotional healing is done by accepting what happened and see the poor behavior of their parents for what it really was. Do not try to sugarcoat it and not allow these previous bad parental behaviors to control who you are as a person now. You need to learn to trust others based on how they are treating you. When you determine who you can trust, you can then be honest with them to gain some insight into your behaviors and how you look at life. As appropriate, seek out a trained therapist with experience with adults who grew up in dysfunctional and psychologically devastating homes to learn the right path to personal satisfaction and not allowing the past to destroy the present and future. The combination of counseling and the person learning to make good decisions in relationships with others can lead to a successful and happy life in the present, which means there will be a good future with the emotional and physical destruction from the past put in its appropriate dumpster and not being allowed to be destructive as you lead hopefully a happy and successful life. It is critical adults who grew up in dysfunctional toxic homes not allow their parents who mistreated them to negatively impact their ability to lead successful lives with others and themselves in the present.

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 AM discuss WHY MEN WILL NOT COMMIT TO A RELATIONSHIP

May 12, 2026- While it is true that women often will not commit to a relationship, our topic today is why men will not commit to a relationship. This is frustrating and can be devastating to a woman who is looking forward to a relationship with a man who just will not commit. At times these men may seem close and they may profess love and do all the things one would expect as steps leading to the final lifetime commitment. That these steps do not lead to a final commitment shows it is a problem not only for the person who will not get the commitment, but often for the person not giving it. I have known many men over the years who could not make a commitment and ended up making a commitment to someone else they loved, but they feel they could have loved someone more if they had only made the commitment when the time was right. Typical reasons a man will not commit would include fear of responsibilities, fearing a loss of freedom, not willing to give up the single life, has had previous disastrous relationships, fear of committing again and being rejected, difficult growing up home experiences that make him fearful to enter a lifelong relationship with someone, fear of arguing constantly in a home and not having peace, unfulfilled career educational goals, fears of abandonment, feeling unworthy of being loved, poor timing in relation to where they are in life and desire to be, cannot make a person number one but always number two or lower, happy with the relationship the way it is, may only want sex, may want many women and not only one, desires to be more stable financially, not comfortable if the partner is making more income than he is, and many other reasons that can exist. While this may seem like a large list of reasons that persons are fearful of entering into a lifelong commitment, there are things to do to counter these potential problem areas and make sure you are not drawn into a never-ending relationship with no commitment to you. They would include determining what you want and need as a relationship develops, indicate to your partner openly and do not hide them and then develop great anger and frustration, become friends first and sexual partners second, keep things very basic and simple as far as your goals and desires, be patient but have a clear ending time so you can maintain self-respect and an opportunity to find someone who wants to be committed to you for a lifetime. It also can be helpful when in such a situation to seek the advice of loving family and friends as well as a trained therapist experienced in such situations.

Dr Braccio & Mike Austin THE ONGOING CHRISTMAS SPIRIT FOR EVERYONE- subscribe to our YouTube page!

December 23, 2025- I always enjoy doing our annual segment on Christmas. Christmas is a special time for me as a Christian along with 2 billion other persons. It is a time for humility as one realizes how much better they could be by trying to improve themselves not out of guilt but out of desire to be more like the Prince of Peace,Jesus Christ, and focusing on treating others as you would have them treat you and try to enhance themselves to be better persons. We all fail at times. Let Christmas be a time to work at being the best we can be and eliminate behaviors that are inconsistent with being a Christian. I also believe one does not need to be a Christian to enjoy Christmas. I can certainly appreciate and respect Hanukkah,Ramadan and other religious holidays that are not Christian. To me, the ongoing Christmas spirit for everyone is best summed up by the biblical golden rule: “Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.” My point here is that Christ really was the Prince of Peace. He came not to kill and destroy, but rather to offer a road to eternity for those who accepted him as their savior and were willing to live a life dedicated to him. To me, the Christmas spirit is a time that we do act out of love, caring and a commitment to human beings and try to do whatever we can to advance them. It also is true a person can be a Hindi, Jew, Muslim, secular humanist or whatever one might want to be and still accept Christ as the Prince of Peace and somebody who came to the world to offer humankind a strong moral way to live and help others. This is unfortunately often lost at a time when people get overwhelmed with buying and giving gifts, meeting with family members they really do not want to meet with and being forced into social settings again with persons they do not care for and would not be with, but need to due to family or work expectations. If in one of those situations, my advice is to be pleasant and do what one has to do as often happens during Christmas and the holidays. Try to always remember what the purpose of Christmas is as we celebrate either the Lord and Savior for Christians or a good human being offering all of us a roadmap to being a better human being on earth. It also is a time as we have discussed before where the Hallmark Movies can bring some tears to the eyes as they show how love can be kind during the Christmas time. I particularly like the Hallmark Movie, “Finding Christmas Father”. It also is a time to think of the always popular “Christmas Carol” written in 1843 by Charles Dickens, where Ebeneezer Scrooge ends up being a good person and looks after Tiny Tim and his family during and after Christmas. My final comments are that you enjoy the spirit of Christmas and think of Christ as either your Savior or a wonderful human being who came forward to offer peace and tranquility to persons who are willing to focus on helping others and being the best they can be as human beings. Also,do not allow yourself to be overwhelmed by persons who claim to be Christians but do not behave as Christians should or the negative appropriation that comes from the commercialization of Christmas.

Dr John Braccio & Mike Austin of 1320 discuss KICKING OUT FEELINGS OF WORTHLESSNESS

Christmas 2025-A person’s self- worth is critical to their happiness in life. It has amazed me over the years when doing intakes with clients how many of them have feelings of worthlessness. This is very sad
when one realizes how critical it is for persons to believe in their ability to achieve in life and
have positive relationships with people. If someone has feelings of worthlessness about
themselves, they do not see themselves as worthy to be with persons of character and strong
self-worth. Instead, they often live on the edges of life and wait for psychological and even
physical abuse because of their belief they have no worth to themselves or anyone else.
Persons like this can have some successful relationships and also obtain employment. The
problem is in most relationships they tend to be with persons who direct them, bully them or
generally control the course for whatever they do with them. This happens in abusive
relationships where we see people beaten into the ground emotionally and sometimes
physically over and over again because they believe they are worthless and deserve such
treatment. Persons who see themselves as worthless do not have psychologically healthy
relationships because they do not see themselves as worthy of having them.
The sad thing is that many persons feel worthless because this belief is entrenched as part of
their personality. When someone is like this, they have little hope for happiness in life and the
only glimmer of happiness they get is from someone who may be taking advantage of them,
gives them a smile or tells them in spite of their worthlessness, they can get a few things done
right with appropriate direction. The question then becomes, what does one do when they have
genuine feelings of worthlessness and cannot muster the energy, desire, and will to be
successful because they believe they are worthless and it is not possible? To begin you need to
take a time out and come to the conclusion you are worthwhile, can advance in life, can be
loved and be happy. You must accept the fact you are not worthless and whatever flaws or
deficiencies you have, you have the ability to work on them and develop them as well as
acknowledging the strengths you have and develop them. You immediately need to be around
good people who are willing to be supportive to you, not take advantage of you and just accept
that you are a worthwhile person. This is much harder to do than one might think. When one
has ingrained views of themselves as worthless and have lived lives where they have lived up to
that low expectation, it is hard, even if you finally come to the conclusion you are not worthless,
to go forward and make the decisions that will make you feel like a worthwhile person who
deserves a positive life with friends and job opportunities consistent with your abilities.
Something called cognitive restructuring is also critical. This is when a person starts kicking out
negative thoughts and replacing them with positive thoughts. A basic one is if you keep telling
yourself you are worthless and do not deserve anything good in life, you have to come back and
say you are a worthwhile human being and you do deserve good things in life. You also need to
take an honest inventory of your skill sets and determine which ones can be developed now to
best advantage you in life. Make today the last day you will see yourself as worthless and the
beginning of a time you will see yourself as worthwhile and have a happy life where you will not
be taken advantage of by those who accepted your views of yourself as a worthless person. If it
is late at night that you hear or read this, take the night off and begin tomorrow morning on your
happy voyage in life as a worthwhile person! If you find you are not able to make this transition
from feeling worthless to worthwhile, you may find an experienced therapist working with such
situations can best help you on your voyage to being the worthwhile and happy person you
    know you can become.
