Disappointment is a common experience for human beings. With that said, great disappointment in a lost love, lost job promotion, loss of friendship, not getting a job one greatly desired, not being accepted into a college/university of choice, making a horrible choice with severe consequences, etc., can be devastating for the person. One must realistically assess the disappointment, psychologically decide how to move on, learn from it, not give up on life, and plan for the future. This is much harder to do than it might seem. Over the decades I have spent thousands of hours in therapy trying to help persons overcome the psychological effects of great disappointment. It can be a huge psychological hurdle to overcome even for the strongest of persons. Disappointment can be a tool to move us forward by changing our skill sets and abilities in ways to advance us in life.
